The Applied Liberal Arts & Sciences (ALA&S) program offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor of arts degree by completing the requirements for two existing UA minors.
The program is designed to encourage degree completion by students who have not made adequate progress toward a degree and are not on track to graduate within 6 years of their college start date.
The program consists of two existing minors, with at least one of the two minors offered in the College of Arts and Sciences, to be selected and approved upon admission to the program and in consultation with an assigned ALA&S advisor.
To enroll in this program, students must meet several eligibility requirements.
Academic Requirements
The ALA&S major consists of two existing UA minors, at least one of which must be in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Due to the large number of combinations possible for the major, refer to the UA catalog for the individual minor requirements for the two minors the student is approved to pursue for the degree.
Courses for the major can include any approved, active course for an existing minor at UA.
Identification of minors will be based on the student’s record. Because the major will correspond to the requirements for two existing UA minors, it can include coursework completed while previously enrolled at UA.
Minors vary in credit hour requirements from 15–24 hours, with most requiring at least 17. Thus, the major can vary from 30 to 48 credit hours depending on which minors the student includes. Due to the large number of combinations possible for the major, refer to the individual minor requirements specified in the UA catalog for each minor the student is approved to pursue upon admission to the degree program.
For each approved minor, students must complete at least 6 upper-level hours in residence, for a total of 12 upper-level hours in the major.
In addition to the requirements for the ALA&S major, students must
- complete the general education requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences
- complete a capstone experience course (ALA 495) focusing on workforce readiness and application of their major in their future careers
- complete a total of 120 credit hours with at least 36 hours at the upper level (including at least 6 upper-level hours completed in residence per approved minor)
- earn a minimum 2.0 GPA in all areas (UA, overall, and each approved minor for the major)
Students will be subject to the requirements for the approved minors as specified in the UA catalog for a student’s catalog year. All requirements for the degree must come from the same catalog year.
